"Minnetonka Mills: A Historic Profile in Pictures
and Stories of a Community in Minnetonka, Minnesota"

This new book was published by the City of Minnetonka Historical Society and written by Betty Johnson.  Betty was just appointed by the City of Minnetonka to be their official City Historian.   The book commemorates the 150th anniversary of Minnetonka Township’s first settlement, Minnetonka Mills, on Minnehaha Creek.  In 1852, the area was Indian territory, hilly and not easy to travel through; thick woods were interspersed with prairies, lakes, streams and marshes.  Today, the city of Minnetonka,Minnesota, is a second ring suburb about ten miles west of downtown Minneapolis, filled with a variety of residential properties, retailbusinesses (including a major regional shopping center), industrial parks with offices, warehouses, manufacturers and service businesses; and lots of open space in parks and along trails and waterways.  But it was quite different in the past.  Stories, photos, and  historical information document the changes from wilderness in The Big Woods to a frontier industrial center to one of several small towns in a rural farming area to a neighborhood in a thriving suburb.
The Historical Society anticipates that this will be the first of several books that explores the heritage of Minnetonka.
