This walking tour takes you through the historic Minnetonka Mills Area. This area was established in the 1850's as the first permanent white settlement west of the Mississippi.

This tour covers approximately 0.7 miles from the Pettijohn house to the Old School.

1. Start at the place of the old Pettijohn house on Baker Road, just north of Inverness Road. Only a foundation and grove of trees outline the residence which is no longer there.

2. Walk north on Baker and visit the Old Town Hall (1906). It is now the annex of Minnetonka Community Church.

3. Across Baker Road to the west is the location of the old Newark Hotel.

4. About 1 block west of the corner of Baker and Minnetonka Dr. is the site of St. John's Episcopal Church which was built in 1858. The church burned in 1918.

4. Walk back to the intersection of Baker and Minnetonka Blvd. On the north side of Minnetonka Blvd. flows Minnehaha Creek whcih was very important to the development of the area. Facing north, you'll see the Burwell house. This "gothic style" house exsists in basically the same configuration as when it was built was built in 1883. Now on the "National Registry of Historic Landmarks," the house is central to the area and the work of the Minnetonka Historical Society.
